Eleele, Kauai, Hawaii, 16 January 1998:
In an effort to give
students real-world insight into the high-technology field, a
Kauai company recently teamed with the University of Hawaii in
a series of guest speaker lectures. Susan Stayton, vice president
and director of technical services of Rare & Dear, Inc. was a
guest speaker for two evening programs in December for University
of Hawaii students and faculty. The program talks were "Oracle's
CASE Methodology" and "Oracle Designer 2000 - Generating Forms
and Reports."
Stayton was invited by Dorothy Wagner, president of Advanced Information
Management Solutions Laboratory (AIMS) and the UH - Decision Science
Department. The AIMS Lab accepts only a selected number of the
highest-qualified students to participate in the Laboratory.
The students focus on using Oracle Database products in order
to equip themselves with the most advanced software technology
skills as they enter the job market. "The students wanted to
hear from someone who had hands-on experience using the tools
because they never had a complete CASE tool to work with in the
classroom," explains Wagner. "Several students have approached
me and commented how interesting the presentation was, and how
eager they were to see a true CASE tool being implemented," Wagner
said.
The AIMS lab is currently building a database for an informational
kiosk for the College of Business Administration. The purpose
of this project is to help people locate CBA staff members and
Department Offices within the College. It will run on an Oracle8
Database and will provide an interactive interface in a multimedia
format.
University of Hawaii has business computer classes of all types
but was unable to find anyone in the state who had the experience
in teaching and in using Oracle Designer/2000 until they found
Stayton. In addition to being the vice president and director
of technical services, Stayton has a varied background in teaching
and lecturing at Kauai Community College, California State University
at Fullerton, and Arizona State University.
