Kauai High Tech
Up, Up and Away!
INSIDE kauai, March/April 1998. (Kauai, Hawaii)
Those fortunate enough to find themselves in the high technology sector will probably
tell you this: Our numbers are up! This is one industry on Kauai that, though small,
appears to have a very bright future. The Pacific Missile Range Facility on the island’s
west side continues to be the source of the bulk of Kauai’s high technology jobs. But a
number of smaller companies are emerging.
Ned Dana is president of Rare & Dear, a software consulting company founded in 1996.
"While it’s becoming increasingly competitive, the business outlook in our industry is
very good," says Dana. Very good, indeed. In the past year the company’s payroll has
more than doubled. Its total sales nearly tripled between 1996 and 1997.
Dana says the nature of the high-technology industry affords his business the opportunity
to export expertise and services to other parts of the state as well as the mainland. He
notes that one potential obstacle in the future will be finding and keeping qualified staff.
Rare & Dear, Inc. is a Hawaii-based information
management consulting company, with special emphasis on Oracle technology.
Rare & Dear has offices on Kauai, Oahu and in Oakland, California.
