Clients, staff and business associates of Rare & Dear, Inc., Kauai's own Oracle technology specialists, gathered in Kalaheo, Kauai for a relaxing day of croquet on Sunday, August 1, 1999. This was the Fourth Annual Croquet event held by Rare & Dear. Nearly 30 guests joined the staff this year, with many guests coming over from Honolulu just for the day.
The Kalaheo weather cooperated with warmth and sunshine. Local delicacies, finger food and refreshing drinks were served all day on the covered lanai. Two professional croquet courses were set up on the front lawn and teams of six competed in matches during the day. The croquet matches varied from whimsical to competitive based on the mix of players.
As the matches were played, the guests were treated to the soothing sounds of Alii Strings, a string quartet performing under the porte cochere. The Alii Quartet, consisting of Dr. Ed deDeo, on bass, Laura Haake, viola, Mark Asay, violin and Dr. Dennis Haake, violin. The group performed a variety of musical pieces including Water Music from Handel, Vivaldi's Spring Movement, and Henry Mancini's Pink Panther. The musicians, members of the Kauai Community College Orchestra, began playing as a quartet in early 1999. Since then they have performed for various religious and secular functions.
Rare & Dear's first Croquet Party held in the summer of 1996 was created to take advantage of the gorgeous expanse of front lawn at Brydeswood, the historic McBryde Plantation Manager's House and residence of Rare & Dear's Chief Technical Officer Ned Dana and his family. This event was so popular with both the Kauai and Oahu guests that it was unanimous decision to make it an annual event.
