Na Pua No' eau - Kauai Explores
Careers in Computer Technology
Eleele, Kauai, Hawaii, 23 September 1997
Na Pua No`eau, a program that serves students
of Native Hawaiian ancestry recently brought 15 students on a
field trip to Rare & Dear, a local software development consulting
company.
Na Pua No`eau was developed to help students move through the
transition of high school to college and on to a career. The
summer program has been expanded to all the islands this year
so that over 180 students participated statewide.
Ned Dana, president and principal consultant, greeted the students
with a history of his background in the computer industry starting
from when he worked as a math aid in college to being hired at
Oracle Corp. as senior technical staff member developing the first
database for the company.
The students were then given a tour of the Rare & Dear offices
with a stop in each department where the employees gave a description
of their job responsibilities. After the tour the students and
staff gathered in the conference room for snacks and a discussion
about monitoring taro farming using computers.
Rare & Dear, Inc., a Hawaii-based, information management consulting
firm was founded in 1994 by Ned Dana, who has more than 20 years
of experience in the computer industry. The Corporate Headquarters,
with 14 employees, is located in Ele`ele, at the former McBryde
Sugar Offices.
