Kauai Business Report,
March 1999. (Kauai, Hawaii) Exerpt By Peter McClaran
The premise is that Kauai can attract Internet-related high-tech business can be conducted anywhere you have a computer and a modem.
At least two new businesses have come to Kauai to test that premise.
One is called Red Line Media, which moved its headquarters from Indiana to Kauai last month.
Another high-tech company that is making a go of it on Kauai is Rare & Dear, located in the Kalaheo area. It was founded by Oracle software expert Ned Dana a few years ago. According to one of his managers, Anita Truso, they are also doing work for major Mainland corporations including Cisco and Millennia Vision Corp. and amazon.com. She said these large computer companies are out-sourcing Oracle software development work to Rare & Dear for "quick turn-around projects."
These big companies "can't do everything, so they out-source things that they can get a better value on," said Randy Holt, who is a Rare & Dear sales person in Honolulu. He said they use the Oracle-based software to help clients turn static information into dynamic information that improves the efficiency of business.
Some of Rare & Dear's work includes improving Internet software to speed up the delivery of content to web sites of the Internet companies.
Truso said there are currently about 200 top Web sites in the world, and hooking up with them for business is the wave of the future. She said Rare & Dear currently employs 12 on Kauai and four people in Honolulu. She said that while the company can work from Kauai, Dana must often travel to the Mainland to meet potential clients and create partnerships with Mainland companies.
